Bij leven verschenen enkele korte verhalen in The Atlantic Monthly , maar vlak voor zijn eerste verhalenbundel zou verschijnen pleegde hij zelfmoord. Zijn ongebruikelijke middelste naam - D'J staat voor Dexter John - ontstond na een tikfout in The Atlantic Monthly , die Pancake bewust liet staan....
