Lebowski Publishers is a dynamic and innovative publishing house. We focus on literary fiction, (true) crime, narrative non-fiction and urban culture. Our aim is to publish a small and balanced list of authors, to maximum effect. We put a lot of effort into public relations, design, editing, our website and the marketing of our books. We don't mind publishing bestsellers.

Oscar van Gelderen op shortlist Uitgever van het jaar
Oscar van Gelderen (Lebowski), René Bego (Mo’media), Valentine van der Lande (TenPages.com), Joost Nijsen (Podium) en Sander Ruys (Maven) zijn door de jury genomineerd voor de shortlist van de verkiezing Uitgever van het Jaar 2011.
Donderdag 8 december is deze shortlist bekend gemaakt door Boekblad Magazine. De jury ziet in deze vijf genomineerden ondernemende, daadkrachtige en aansprekende persoonlijkheden die met open vizier de toekomst tegemoettreden en in die zin een voorbeeldfunctie vervullen binnen de branche. ‘Ze hebben grote marketingkracht gemeen, ze krijgen mensen aan het lezen, en bovenal tonen ze ondernemerszin.’
Op vrijdag 20 januari wordt tijdens het Boekblad Winter Dinner de winnaar bekendgemaakt.

Oscar van Gelderen op longlist Uitgever van het jaar
Voor de tweede maal organiseert Boekblad de verkiezing Uitgever van het Jaar. De vakjury heeft daarvoor 15 uitgevers/directeuren genomineerd: negen zelfstandige uitgevers, twee van WPG, drie van VBK en één van LannooMeulenhoff.

De hipste uitgever van Nederland. Een lefgozer.
Angry Young Publisher. Er zijn genoeg etiketten in de media te vinden over de eigenzinnige Oscar van Gelderen (46) . Met uitgeverij Lebowski boekte hij in april dit jaar een van zijn grootste successen. “Oscar zou ook makkelijk in de muziek, kunst of films kunnen.”

In de laatste editie van de Literaire Pikorde van HP/DeTijd werd hij ‘met voorsprong de hipste uitgever van Nederland’ genoemd: Oscar van Gelderen.

Voor de dertiende keer presenteerde HP/De Tijd de Literaire Pikorde, de jaarlijkse topveertig van de belangrijkste spelers in het boekenvak in de aanloop naar de Boekenweek. ‘Whizzkid’ Martijn Griffioen, managing director bij Dutch Media Uitgevers, is dit jaar de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer op 19. Oscar van Gelderen, ‘met voorsprong de hipste uitgever van Nederland’, steeg dit jaar maar liefst veertien plaatsen en kwam op 8 terecht: ‘Van Gelderen organiseerde een party rond het fenomeen Banksy voordat iemand in Nederland van de graffiti-artiest had gehoord.’

Christie’s Amsterdam is privileged to share thoughts with Oscar van Gelderen of Lebowski Publishers in Amsterdam, publisher of the iconic book The Faith of Graffiti by Norman Mailer/Jon Naar and, more recently, the ‘bible of street art’, Banksy’s Wall and Piece. He has also published Are You Reading Me? and Stencil King by Dutch street artists Laser 3.14 en Hugo Kaagman.
Why is Lebowski branding itself as the publishing house for street art?
We think that street art is a very free form of expression. Bypassing curators, museum directors and other art moguls, the street is a gallery accessible to all. The street is also very democratically inclined – when your work is considered mediocre, it will be painted over. So everybody can join the game, but only the strong survive. In June 2011, we will publish the biography of the founder of Dutch graffiti, Dr. Rat. We try to push the Dutch scene a bit as the ‘official art scene’ already has enough supporters.
Would you ever consider doing a book on the artists featured in this catalogue (Nineteen to Now: Art from the 19th, 20th & 21st centuries)?
In a certain way we already have! In this catalogue Christie’s offers an impressive line-up of some of the most respected names in graffiti. Pioneers such as Dondi White, A-one and Zephyr caught the imagination of ‘great American novelist’ Norman Mailer, who in 1974 teamed up with photographer Jon Naar to produce Watching My Name Go By, which is still considered the ‘big book of graffiti’. We launched a new edition in 2009 as The Faith in Graffiti.
Do you collect street art yourself?
I have acquired a few bits and pieces over the years from most of the household names in the scene, such as Banksy, Jose Parla, Adam Neate, Barry McGee and JR. I like the wild mix of influences represented in street art, the variety of materials used, and the political, subversive and anti-establishment attitude.

Boekomslag 2010
De omslag met het krachtige en tegelijk subtiele beeld - het continent van Afrika in felrood dat door vijf blots tegelijk een voetafdruk is - was duidelijk favoriet. Het werd ontworpen door Dog and Pony voor Lebowski Publishers.
Le Conseguenze dell'amore and Il Divo (we will publish the first novel of Paolo Sorrentino, its director, fall 2010)
Exit Through the Gift Shop (we published Wall & Piece from its director, a man called Banksy. The film will be out in Holland end of september 2010)
True Grit (out around Christmas 2010, this is the remake by the Coen Brothers of the 1968 film for which John Wayne won his only Oscar. The book on which the film is based upon was written by the fabulous Charles Portis. We want to publish all his books)
